This article is for families — especially English-speaking travelers — planning a trip to Okinawa’s remote islands. It offers a detailed firsthand review of a full-day snorkeling and island exploration tour in Iriomote, including helpful tips on logistics, food, and family-friendly highlights.
Looking for the ultimate tropical day trip in Japan that blends nature, culture, and adventure? in Japan that blends nature, culture, and adventure? Our Iriomote family snorkeling tour with a visit to Hatoma Island checked all the boxes — from snorkeling over coral reefs to discovering hidden gems on a remote Okinawan island.
Morning: Snorkeling Near Barasu Island
At 9:00 AM, our guide picked us up from the hotel, and we headed straight to the marina. Our boat ride took us to the snorkeling spots near Barasu Island. Although the island itself was submerged due to the tide, the surrounding coral reefs were breathtaking.

We snorkeled at two different locations, spending about 20 minutes at each. The water was crystal-clear, and we spotted colorful coral and tropical fish — including a few clownfish that thrilled our daughter. This was the perfect start to our Iriomote family snorkeling adventure.
Lunch and Leisure on Hatoma Island with Kids

After the morning snorkelers disembarked at Uehara Port, we welcomed new guests aboard for the afternoon half-day tour and sailed to the remote Hatoma Island. Around 12:30 PM, we landed on the island, where the captain served up a mild curry lunch — great for kids who don’t like spicy food.

We then enjoyed a casual walk through the island. Our daughter wanted to see the local elementary school her friend attends. On the way, we passed walls lined with painted fishing buoys — a vibrant, artistic touch that felt distinctly Okinawan. Near the school, we discovered an open area with a stunning ocean view.

On our walk back, we stumbled upon a banana shake shop. The island banana shake was perfectly chilled — ideal for the summer heat. The eat-in space was decorated with local artwork and offered handmade donuts and coffee. We wished we had more time to relax there!
Afternoon: Snorkeling Over Table Coral Reefs

The afternoon snorkeling spot was scheduled for two sites, but due to choppy conditions from a nearby typhoon, we visited just one. Even so, the table coral reef we explored was incredible — like swimming over an underwater forest.
This part of our Iriomote family snorkeling tour left a strong impression and was a highlight of the day.
Evening: Pool Time, Sunset, and Local Flavors

We arrived back at the hotel before 4:00 PM and jumped into the pool with our swimsuits still on. Afterward, we warmed up in our room’s bath and relaxed until dinner.

Dinner was not included in the snorkeling tour, but we had a reservation at a local restaurant with hotel pickup. The semi-private room was great for families, and we enjoyed dishes like gurukun (banana fish) pasta and local island fish & chips.

As we dined, a brief tropical downpour gave way to clear skies — and a rainbow appeared outside our window. According to the staff, it’s a rare sight from that location, making our meal feel even more magical.
Optional Tour Operators and Booking Tips

We joined the tour with Mariudo, a local operator known for their island-based adventures. One of their staff members speaks English, so international travelers can feel comfortable booking. Check their official website for details.

If you’re staying at Hoshino Resort, they also offer snorkeling tours that can be easily arranged through the hotel. However, we found that hotel-arranged options tend to be a bit more expensive than third-party tours.
