Planning a family trip to Okinawa’s hidden gems? This article is for travelers seeking a relaxing, nature-rich stay on Iriomote Island. We’ll guide you through our 3-night stay at Iriomote Hotel, part of the Hoshino Resort group, and show you why this family-friendly Okinawa hotel is ideal for slow-paced travel—even during rainy weather. From eco-friendly touches to buffet highlights and practical tips, here’s everything you need to know.

A Full Day Indoors at Iriomote Hotel

During our stay, a small typhoon passed near the island. Despite the wind and off-and-on rain, the Iriomote Hotelexperience remained enjoyable. The private pool was surprisingly busy, but after the previous day’s sea kayaking tour, we decided to rest in the room. I treated myself to a one-hour spa session—an ideal way to unwind.

Buying Local Mangoes and Enjoying Them In-Room

When the rain paused, we walked to a nearby unmanned mango stand. While the hotel doesn’t lend out knives, the staff kindly cut the fruit for us after 7:30 p.m., when the restaurant wasn’t busy. They also provided forks, allowing us to enjoy the fresh mangoes in our room. We even bought two extra to take home!

Welcome Drinks and Sweet Pineapples

Check-in at 3 p.m. comes with a delightful welcome drink service. Fresh pineapple juice, another fruit juice, and slices of juicy raw pineapple are offered. The pineapple was incredibly sweet—don’t miss it!

Buffet Dining: From French Toast to Local Delicacies

Breakfast runs from 6:45 to 9:30 a.m., and dinner from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., both in buffet style. The star of breakfast was the brown sugar French toast, which I couldn’t resist eating every day. Topped with tangy pineapple sauce and sweet black sugar syrup, it was a perfect island-style morning treat. The corn soup was also outstanding.

At dinner, the standout was the miso soup with gazami (coconut crab). Alcohol lovers will enjoy the all-you-can-drink awamori and original cocktails. The wide variety of dishes kept us satisfied through all three nights.

Family Room Review: Daybed vs. Loft

Cozy daybed corner in Iriomote Hotel room with natural light and colorful cushions

This time we stayed in a room with a daybed. During a previous visit, our daughter adored the loft room—but now she says the daybed room is her new favorite. Surprisingly, the daybed rooms are more affordable while still spacious. We plan to book the same type next time.

The room was spacious enough for our family of three to relax comfortably. The beds were wide and came with high-quality mattresses that ensured a great night’s sleep. Both the bathroom and the sink area were generously sized, allowing us to get ready together without feeling cramped—ideal for families traveling with kids.

Sunset Magic on the Private Beach

One of the best features of Iriomote Hotel is its private beach. We thought a sunset might be impossible with the typhoon nearby, but on our first evening, we were treated to a stunning view. From 7:00 to 7:30 p.m., complimentary champagne and juice are served, and the beach fills with happy guests enjoying the moment.

Laundry and Poolside Comforts for Extended Stays

This Japan luxury resort is ideal for longer stays. Coin laundry machines are available, and you can check availability via your in-room tablet. There’s also a convenient spinner near the pool for drying swimsuits. With two machines, there was little wait time.

A large woven basket in the closet was especially useful for carrying laundry or belongings during optional tours. Small but thoughtful details like this made our stay extra comfortable.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Touches

We appreciated the sustainable touches throughout the room: a multipurpose eco-soap for body and hair, curtain pins to block light at night and reduce stress for sea turtles, and the use of reusable amenities. These little details reflect the island’s strong connection to nature and were a lovely touch.

Gift Shop and Outdoor Gear

The hotel shop offers adorable Iriomote wildcat-themed goods and exclusive outdoor gear. They make great souvenirs or gifts for family back home.

Relaxing Lounge and Helpful Tour Desk

On the first floor, the lounge has free water, ice, coffee, tea, and lattes—perfect for relaxing during the day. The adjacent tour desk helps guests book optional tours. Although we missed the famous sagaribana (Barringtonia flower) tour, others raved about it. Unusually, the flowers were still blooming in late July this year—something we regret not experiencing.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re visiting for adventure or relaxation, Iriomote Hotel offers the perfect balance. Even in stormy weather, you’ll find comfort, eco-conscious hospitality, and island charm.
