Iriomote Itinerary Day3: Snorkeling Paradise, Barasu Island & Fusaki Sunset

One of the Biggest Highlights of Our Iriomote Itinerary
After the unforgettable sea kayaking on Day 1, this full-day snorkeling tour to Barasu and Hatoma Islands was the next major adventure! We booked again with Mariudo, the same trusted local operator. Landing on Barasu Island—previously submerged during our last trip—felt like a dream come true. And that first glimpse of the iconic “Hatoma Blue”? Absolutely magical and worth every second.

🌟 Day 3 Highlights: Full-Day Snorkeling & Hatoma Island Walk
We joined a full-day snorkeling tour starting from Barasu Island, where the coral island was submerged in the morning. Still, we snorkeled at two amazing reef spots with colorful fish and coral. After our break on Hatoma Island, we were thrilled to find Barasu Island re-emerged—this time, we finally landed! It was something we missed on a past half-day trip, so this full-day experience was absolutely worth it.

Hatoma Island was just as charming. After a tasty outdoor curry lunch, we had time to explore the quiet paths and scenic coast. We passed Okinawan-style stone walls decorated with hand-painted floats and admired the iconic “Hatoma Blue” sea from a shady park. A banana shake under the summer sun was the perfect way to cool off.

Barasu Island revealed itself just in time—coral sands under our feet after a magical afternoon.

Hatoma Blue—an unreal shade of turquoise we’ll never forget.

🍽️ Island Dinner with a Rainbow Surprise
We took the hotel shuttle to Satonushi, a local restaurant tucked into the greenery. Our table was in a semi-private space at the back, perfect for winding down. Just before dinner, a brief rain cleared—and we were greeted by a huge rainbow stretching across the sky. According to the staff, it’s a rare sight! The Gurukun fish pasta and island-style fish & chips were both outstanding, capping off a perfect island day.

🍊 Fresh Mango Cut at the Hotel
On our last evening, we bought a ripe local mango from an unmanned stand and asked the hotel to cut it for us. Although the hotel doesn’t lend out knives, they kindly offer to cut fruits at the restaurant after 7:30 PM when things settle down. We brought it back to our room and enjoyed it together—a perfect, juicy ending to our island day. We even bought two more mangoes as souvenirs and continued to enjoy them after getting home.
Iriomote Itinerary Day4: From Ferry to Flavors & Farewell

6:45 – Last breakfast at the hotel’s buffet
Fresh fruit, island eggs, and warm bread
9:30 – Ferry from Ohara Port (Iriomote) to Ishigaki Island
10:30 – Shopping at Euglena Mall
Lots of 10% off souvenir shops, including local treats and gifts
11:00~12:00 – Sashimi & cold sweets near the ferry terminal
We found a casual sashimi shop near the port – the fish was so fresh it melted in our mouths. Don’t miss the cold mango sweets nearby for a tropical treat!
12:30 – Lunch at the airport
Yaeyama soba is a must-try. Choose between pork, aosa seaweed, or sea grapes toppings.
14:10 – Flight back to Nagoya

Shopping at Euglena Mall
Just a short walk from the ferry terminal, this shopping street is packed with souvenir stores—many offering 10% discounts. You can also grab local foods and sweets right inside the arcade. We picked up a T-shirt featuring the sea turtle we met while snorkeling—such a perfect family trip keepsake!
On the way to Euglena Mall from the ferry terminal, we also stopped at a small local shop offering freshly cut tuna sashimi. It was the perfect quick break—rich, tender, and incredibly fresh!

Cold sweets shop near Euglena Mall
Just around the corner from Euglena Mall, we found a local dessert shop that crafts custom treats right after you order. Using a chilled stone, the staff mixes creamy ice cream with fresh-cut fruit and juice to make an original creation. Our daughter chose mango, while I went with passionfruit and yogurt—both were incredibly refreshing and full of tropical flavor!

🍜 Yaeyama Soba & Last-Minute Souvenirs
We took the bus from the ferry terminal to Ishigaki Airport, then enjoyed our last island lunch at a soba shop on the first floor. Yaeyama soba is a must-try before leaving the island—simple but full of flavor. We had one topped with pork, the other with sea grapes and aosa seaweed. A warm and satisfying close to our island adventure.
Although the airport doesn’t offer the same discounts as Euglena Mall, its souvenir selection is impressive—including items from Iriomote. It’s a convenient stop if you forgot to pick something up earlier!. Choose between pork, aosa seaweed, or sea grapes toppings.
