Beyond the main island, Miyako, Ishigaki, and Iriomote offer stunning beaches and a truly local island vibe. These family-friendly Okinawa islands are rising stars among Japanese travelers—perfect for your next tropical getaway.
Note: The map shows air or ferry routes from Okinawa Main Island to the outer islands. However, the “Direct Flight” in the table below refers to direct flights from major cities in Japan (e.g. Tokyo, Osaka) to Miyakojima and Ishigaki. Please don’t confuse the two!
📊Quick Comparison Table

---|---|---|---|---|
Miyakojima | Beaches & Villas | 3-4 days | Snorkeling, Private Villas | Direct Flight |
Ishigaki | Balance & Variety | 3-4 days | Sunset Cruises, Local Eats | Direct Flight |

Where to Travel
Discover family-friendly Okinawa islands—Miyako, Ishigaki, and Iriomote—with our sample itineraries and tips.
Suggested Itinerary Combos
- Option 1: Miyakojima only (3–4 days)
- Option 2: Ishigaki + Iriomote combo (3 + 2 days)
- Option 3: All 3 islands (best for 7+ day trip)
Note: There are no direct flights between Miyako and Ishigaki. Transfers must be made via Okinawa Main Island (Naha), which can take several hours.
👉 Personal Tip: We don’t usually recommend Option 3 for families with kids. Inter-island transfers can be time-consuming and tiring. Instead, spending several days on one island lets you truly relax and enjoy the experience. Miyakojima, especially, is perfect for slow travel with kids, thanks to its private villas, resort hotels, and convenient city area.
