Just One Minute to the Sky — The Magic of Takamine Onsen’s Outdoor Bath
Perched at an elevation of 2,000 meters, Takamine Onsen is home to a spectacular outdoor bath “above the clouds.”
On clear days, you can see all the way to the distant Matsumoto plains. On misty days, soaking in the open-air bath wrapped in clouds is an equally magical experience.
We were so enchanted by this view that we came back a second time—and stayed two nights just to try again in sunny weather.

The Short Hike to the Bath Is Part of the Experience
To reach the outdoor bath, you slip into the provided sandals and take a short walk through a peaceful forest trail.
It felt like a mini adventure, especially for our daughter, who loved the journey just as much as the soak.

Mountain Cuisine with Heart: Healthy and Satisfying
Dinner was a warm, home-style Japanese meal featuring local mountain vegetables.
We had hot pots filled with seasonal ingredients—simple, nourishing, and delicious even for our picky eater.

Breakfast was equally satisfying with gentle, detox-style Japanese dishes.
You can even request onigiri the night before if you’re planning a morning hike. Super convenient!
A Family Ryokan You’ll Want to Visit Again and Again
What brought us back for a second stay? The dream of soaking in the outdoor bath under blue skies came true during our two-night retreat. After checking in from Shirakaba Resort, we relaxed in the bath on a misty evening, then joined the nighttime star-gazing tour.
To our surprise, it wasn’t just casual stargazing—two large astronomical telescopes were set up, and we could clearly see the craters on the moon and the rings of Saturn. Our daughter was speechless. So were we.

The next morning, we woke up early and returned to the outdoor bath. The air was crisp and fresh, and the sky—completely clear. Not a single cloud. The view stretched endlessly, and the feeling of soaking in the warm water while surrounded by such pure, open sky was simply unforgettable.
If you’re planning to stay, we highly recommend waking up early at least once for a sunrise soak. The morning air at this altitude feels especially refreshing—and it’s the perfect way to start the day in the Japanese Alps.
On the second day, we hiked Ikenodaira in the morning, then returned to Takamine Onsen for another soak. This kind of slow, nature-rich pace was exactly what we needed.

Hiking Ikenodaira Wetland with a Packed Lunch
With our onigiri in hand, we headed out for a morning adventure.
The hike through Ikenodaira Wetland and Suikoto Island was one of the highlights of our family trip.
It’s an easy trail full of flowers and wide-open skies, perfect for families with young kids.

Extending the Journey: A Visit to Shibu Onsen
After our two-night stay at Takamine Onsen, we continued our journey to Shibu Onsen, a traditional hot spring town full of charm and atmosphere. With its nostalgic streets and access to the Snow Monkey Park, it was a wonderful way to wrap up our Nagano trip.
